History of Mesquite Texas

Mesquite dates to the early 1870’s when an engineer for the Texas and Pacific Railroad filed the first plat for the township of Mesquite with Dallas County. Less than 2 months later after filing in July 1873, the first train to pass through the area came through the community. Mesquite was the second community to incorporate outside of Dallas proper. Lancaster was the first one to incorporate. The population of Mesquite grew slowly. In 1890 the first U.S. Census was taken and Mesquite had a population of 135. Ten years later it had only grown to 270. The estimated population in 2010 is 139,550.
