Manual stick shift for manual transmission

First let’s start at the beginning. Many new drivers and even people that have been driving for years don’t know what kind of transmission is in their vehicle and that’s ok. But to be able to take care of your vehicle better, it’s best to know what type you have under the hood. So, let’s begin with discussing what is a transmission?

What Is a Transmission?

A transmission is one of the most important components of a vehicle. The transmission is a mechanical device that moves the power from the engine to the wheels and regulates the speed and torque to the drive wheels under different driving conditions. The transmission delivers power via the drive train. By changing gears, the transmission allows the wheels to turn forward, backwards and turn from momentum not powered by the engine. From here is where we have different transmission types.

Do I Have a Manual Transmission?

A manual transmission is a multi-speed transmission system which requires the driver to manually select the gears by operating a stick shift and clutch pedal. It’s easy to identify if your vehicle has a manual transmission by checking to see if you have a clutch pedal. The clutch pedal is located to the left of the brake pedal. Manual transmission is more fuel efficient than automatic transmissions and allows the driver to have added control that a stick shift provides.

Do I Have an Automatic Transmission?

An automatic transmission is a multi-speed transmission that does not require any input from the driver to change gears. An automatic transmission uses a different type of gearset that does the shifting for you requiring less work from the driver. Automatic transmission does not have a clutch pedal.

Do I Have a CVT?

A CVT which stands for “ Continuously Variable Transmission ” doesn’t utilize gears like a typical automatic transmission, it uses 2 pulleys attached to a belt. CVT transmissions allow the driver to accelerate continuously without shifting breaks. To tell whether you have a CVT look under the hood. Most cars will have a description of what type of transmission the vehicle has.
