What is Manual Transmission?

A manual transmission, also known as manual gearbox, stick shift, or standard transmission, is a vehicle transmission system that is multi-speed motor. A manual transmission requires the driver to manually change the gears by operating a gear stick and clutch. The gearbox is the second stage in the transmission system, after the clutch. It provides a selection of gears for different driving conditions. Modern vehicles with manual transmissions normally have four to five forward speeds, one reverse, and a neutral position, however, depending on the year the vehicle was made a manual transmission can have anywhere between three to seven gears.

What Are Common Manual Transmission Problems?

Manual transmission problems, although rather rare, can develop from gradual wear and tear resulting from lack of proper maintenance, abuse, or high mileage. Transmission problems are usually caused by connected components, such as driveline, linkage, and the assembly.

Warning signs that could point to a worn-out transmission are:

  • Strange noise like persistent whirring, bumping, squealing, thumping, or grinding.
  • Slipping or grinding gears.
  • Gear stick shift is difficult to change in and out of gears.
  • Burning smell while driving.
  • A delay in shifting.
  • Leaking Transmission Fluid.
