Low transmission fluid is a common issue with transmissions.
Transmission fluid is a vital component for the function of your transmission. Its
purpose is to keep the transmission lubricated and cooled. Without the proper
amount of transmission fluid, your transmission can overheat or have a variety
of other issues, including transmission failure. Fortunately, low transmission
fluid has signs and symptoms that can help you catch it early.
Leaking Transmission Fluid—
When you have low transmission fluid it usually indicates
that you have a leak. Transmission fluid is in a sealed unit and does not
evaporate, so if it is leaking there is a problem. If you notice a reddish
fluid on the ground where your vehicle was previously parked, it is most likely
leaking transmission fluid.
Engaging and Shifting Problems—
The transmission fluid determines the pressure levels in the
transmission. In other words, when the transmission fluid is low then the
pressure levels become low too. A low-pressure
level can cause your vehicle to have a delay in gear engagement. Slow gear
engagement will make your vehicle take a few seconds longer when shifting into drive
or reverse. You may also experience
problems with shifting, such as difficultly shifting, shift resistance, or
shift friction.
Strange Noises—
Just like you may feel a difference when you are
experiencing transmission problems, you can also sometimes hear a difference.
Transmission issues may tell you there is a problem just by making odd sounds.
Take note if your vehicle is shuddering and making grinding, whirring, or
clunking noises.
Slipping Gears—
Like we mentioned earlier, low transmission fluid may cause resistance
in shifting, but it can also not have enough resistance when shifting. Slipping
gears is when it is too easy to shift. Without proper resistance, transmissions
can slip out of gear. This issue can be extremely dangerous and should be
addressed as soon as you notice it.
It is important to get your vehicle checked out if you have
any of these symptoms. These symptoms can all be signs of low transmission
fluid which can lead to transmission failure if not addressed in a timely
manner. If you notice leaking transmission fluid or any of these signs, get
your vehicle to a transmission shop soon.
