What is a Lock Up Torque Converter

A Torque Converter is a doughnut-shaped internal engine component that’s directly attached between the transmission and engine. It is a type of fluid coupling which is used in automobile transmissions as an alternative to a mechanical clutch. It allows the engine to spin somewhat independently of the transmission. Automatic transmission cars use a torque converter. Manual transmission cars use a clutch, which completely disconnects the engine from the transmission. A torque converter provides the same function in an automatic vehicle as a clutch in a manual vehicle. This allows the engine to keep running as the wheels come to a stop. When your car is stopped at a stoplight, the engine is turning slowly therefore the amount of torque passed through the torque converter is very small resulting in only a small amount of pressure on the brake pedal to keep the car still.
What is a Lockup Clutch? A lockup clutch is a type of converter that has a clutch. It offers fuel economy, enabling you to use less fuel. This clutch causes the engine to lock to the transmission input shaft. This leads to a direct 1:1 drive ratio.
What are the signs of a failing Torque Converter? There are many types of torque converter problems. Some of the most common ones are:  Shuddering or Slipping: A malfunctioning torque converter can have a shudder or even a slipping that comes from the transmission. Overheating: Overheating is another indication that your torque converter is failing. If your car transmission keeps overheating along with your transmission acting differently good chance it could be your torque converter is failing. Torque Seal Damage: If your torque converter seals get damaged you will experience fluid leaks. This will cause damage to both the transmission and the converter.
