The transmission of your vehicle is the most complex and least understood significant element in your vehicle or truck.
The transmission is a mixture of advanced hydraulics and computer-controlled electronic components in today's vehicles. The transmission is a mechanical element intended to convey energy from the engine of a car to the drive axle, which makes the wheels drive the car. The transmission changes the power and velocity levels to the wheels by varying the gear ratio. For example, the transmission provides more power and less speed in low ranges; in high ranges, the opposite is true. This decreases the load on the engine while improving the speed and fuel economy of the vehicle. Some cars use a clutch to connect and disconnect the transmission to the engine, regulated by a foot pedal next to the brake pedal. These cars have a hand-held transmission.
If your vehicle has no clutch pedal, it has an automatic transmission. Automatic transmissions rely on a special fluid called ATF to cool and lubricate the moving parts inside. But the fluid does more than that: in reality, saying that the fluid actually drives the car is no exaggeration. So there is little doubt that the fluid is very essential to the operation of the transmission. That's why it's essential to verify the transmission fluid level and condition frequently (check your owner's handbook) and have your transmission serviced at least every couple of years. Later model front wheel drive vehicles also integrate another significant element into the transmission body itself: the differential or final drive. These kinds of transmission are known as transaxles. Configuration of the front wheel drive increases fuel economy and handling and lowers manufacturing costs. But because of the extra parts in the transaxle, repairing is usually more costly than a transmission when it fails.
