Many people know that there are different types of transmission,
but not all know what those differences are. Manual and Automatic transmission is
widely known, though some may have not even heard of CVT transmissions. The
type of transmission is an important thing to consider when looking to buy a
vehicle.
The transmission is a vital part of the vehicle, since it
transfers power from the engine to the axles, from the axles to the wheels for
your vehicle to move. Not all transmissions are powered the same way. The three
types of transmissions are manual, automatic, and CVT. So, what are the
different types of transmission?
What is a Manual Transmission
The manual transmission is a simple design though complex to
drive. These days, most people don’t know how to drive them. People also refer
to them as a “stick shift” or “standard transmission.” It uses a clutch, which
is operated by the driver, to control the required torque that is transferred
from the engine to transmission. The clutch can either engage or disengage by
the driver using the lever or petal.
What is an Automatic Transmission
Automatic transmissions have a complex design but are much simpler
to drive. The automatic transmission is like the name implies. It automatically
changed the gear ratios, so that the driver doesn’t have to manually change
gears. That means that vehicles with automatic transmissions have better control
at lower speeds.
What is a CVT Transmission
CVT is short for “Continuous Variable Transmission.” Similar
to the automatic transmission, but instead of having a specific number of gear
ratios, it has a continuous range of gear ratio. (Hence the name!) They are
shiftless transmissions design with a belt. CVT transmissions function with
efficiency.
