A car refusing to reverse is a major inconvenience. Your
transmission is likely to be the blame for any reversing issues since the
transmission is created with various gear sets that control the amount of power
to your car. In most cases, reverse issues are a cause for major repairs.
What to
Do if Your Car isn’t Reversing
1.First, make sure your parking brake is not set.2.If it is cold outside, keep your car running to
allow the transmission fluid to warm up.3.Still not working? Call your local transmission
shop, Eagle Transmission, to run a diagnosis. Initial checks are free!
Three
Reasons for Problem with Reversing
Reason One: Issue with Transmission Fluid
Transmission fluid is a common reason for transmission
problems. If your transmission fluid is overdue for a change, it may be dirty
and contaminated. Contaminated transmission fluid does not properly lubricate
the transmission system, because it is too dirty and grimy. It can ruin
transmission parts, such as seals, gaskets, or even the transmission as a
whole.
Low transmission fluid is typically caused by a leak and can
affect your transmission the same as dirty, old transmission fluid. Without the
required amount of transmission fluid, your transmission can overheat from the
lack of fluid to cool down the system. Transmission fluid not only lubricates
throughout the transmission and engine but it also keeps it cool. Too low of
transmission fluid can result in gears slipping, difficultly shifting, or
severe overheating.
Old transmission can be fixed by a professional flush and
fluid replacement. Fluid level can be determined by checking the dipstick
labeled “Transmission.” It is recommended to replace transmission fluid around
30,000 to 60,000.
Reason Two: Faulty Parts
Automatic
transmissions have gearshifts with a sensor.
Those sensors tell the car to reverse when it is in the reverse position.
Sometimes the sensors can become faulty and will usually lead to your check
engine light to flash on. If you have a manual car, the shifter makes become
faulty, which can prevent you from shifting to reverse. It is commonly caused
by a shortage in the cable, like a bend or split in the cable.
Reason Three: Gear Issues
A broken gear may be the problem if you are hearing an odd
clicking or loud grinding noise. Broken gears can happen in automatic or manual
transmissions. This issue should be addressed by a professional transmission
mechanic.
