What are Some Common Problems in Dodge Automatic Transmissions?

Dodge automatic transmissions use a wide array of sensors and modules to regulate speed and to determine when they should shift gears and change them using internal fluid pressure. In an automatic transmission, the torque converter is what connects the power source to the load. To shift gears an automatic transmission disconnects from the engine which is controlled by the lock-up in the torque converter. Automatic transmissions have different gear ratios and to supply power, the torque converter uses transmission fluid. Its very important to check transmission fluid levels regularly to keep your transmission working properly.

Common Problems in Dodge Automatic Transmissions

In an Dodge automatic transmission a malfunctioning torque converter is one of the most common causes of transmission failure. Torque converters function the same way as a clutch in a manual transmission by shifting gears. It determines the amount of fluid which is passed on to the automatic transmission which allows the engine to run while at a complete stop. If your torque converter is malfunctioning, over the course of weeks or even months, it will continue to fail until it completely breaks down. This can cause significant damage to your transmission.

Signs of a Malfunctioning Torque Converters or Other Transmission Problems:

Overheating: An overheating transmission usually indicates there is some internal damage or a transmission fluid issue.
Grinding, Slipping or Jerking: A grinding noise when shifting gears could be friction between gears due to low transmission fluid, a dragging clutch, or several other issues.
Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Once the transmission fluid is contaminated, it loses its ability to keep the engine cool causing an overheated transmission.
Check Engine Light is On: If the transmission sensors report a problem, the ECM will turn on the check engine light.
