Transmission Fluid Misconceptions

Transmission fluid for transmission services - Transmission Flush

Transmissions are one of the most misunderstood and neglected parts of a vehicle. Transmission, if neglected, can end up costing you thousands of dollars. Here are some misconceptions concerning transmission fluid changes.

When To Get a Transmission Fluid Change:

Most manufacturers will recommend every 30,000 to 60,000 miles for changing your transmission fluid. Some manufacturers’ maintenance schedule for many automatic transmissions recommends fresh fluid at 100,000 miles or more. Most mechanics say that it should be done sooner, at least every 50,000 miles.
Let’s consider the importance of transmission fluid. Vehicles with automatic transmissions, the fluid acts as a coolant. It is used to lubricate the components of a car’s transmission to ensure proper operation and optimum performance. Vehicles with dirty fluid running through the system can cause overheating. Furthermore, excess dirt and contaminants in the transmission can become bogged down causing other problems to occur. Best to get a transmission fluid changed sooner than later.

Transmission Fluid is Only in Automatic Transmission

Automatic transmissions recommended figures are listed above but vehicles with a manual transmission most manufacturer will recommend changing your transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Most cars driven are automatic transmission and require transmission fluid, but a manual transmission uses something else.
Automatic transmission fluid also referred to as ATF, is the type of hydraulic fluid used in vehicles with automatic transmissions. Manual transmissions typically use transmission oil, motor oil or heavyweight hypoid gear oil.

Synthetic Verses ATF Fluid

Synthetic transmission fluid is synthesized so the fluid is more efficient. It is superior in lubricating due to its superior engineering and has a fairly consistent viscosity across the temperature spectrum. Conventional ATF may become thicker in cooler temperatures.
