Your Transmission in Cold Weather
The wintertime can create chaos for your car’s transmission
system. Common symptoms of transmission problems in cold weather can be your
transmission slipping. The cold weather can cause your transmission system to have
a low line pressure by freezing and leaking fluid from the transmission seals.
When a transmission has a low line pressure it can mean multiple things such as
inadequate fluid within the system, slipping transmission, and improper
function of gears. The transmission pressure levels and fluid play an important
role in regulating temperate to ensure the proper function of your transmission
in the cold weather.
Transmission problem when it is cold outside:
Transmission Shifting Problem –
Your transmission can be harder to shift in cold weather
because shift points become delayed. These delayed shifting can produce
increased pressure within multiple transmission parts. Increased pressure can
somethings result in transmission failure as time goes on.
A contraction in Transmission –
When the transmission gets cold it can cause parts to
contract in size. Parts that have contracted fit looser than they are supposed
to, which can make parts wear out faster or cause leaks due to seals shrinking.
Delayed Overdrive –
There can be a computer delay when the transmission is not at
a proper temperature to function correctly. A delayed overdrive can impact the
forward gears and the smoothness of your drive.
Thick Transmission Fluid –
Your transmission fluid can change viscosity in cold
weather. The cold can make the transmission fluid thicker. The ideal
transmission fluid is between 150 degrees to 200 degrees. When a transmission
is below 0 degrees, it results in too thick of transmission fluid. If
transmission fluid is too thick it will be unable to lubricate parts, and prematurely
wear out parts. Using synthetic fluid can sufficiently help in very cold
temperatures.
