My Transmission Sounds Like Rocks

Does it sound like rocks in a tumbler under the hood? Could be signs of trouble that could escalate to significant repairs if not taken care of immediately. Rattling that sounds like a tumbler of rocks could be coming from your engine, transmission, or other parts of your car and can escalate to more serious issues if not addressed. First, you need to accurately determine its origin so during inspection the technician can pinpoint where the repair is needed and be able to make an accurate diagnosis.
Rattling Could Be More Than a Transmission Issue : Try to pinpoint the approximate area where the noise is coming from. Is it coming from the underside of the car or the hood? Does it rattle while the car is accelerating or just sitting still idling? Answering these questions can determine if you most likely have an issue with the transmission or if another part of your car needs repairs.
A Failed Engine Mount: An engine mount is the part of your car that holds the engine in place. The transmission and engine are bolted together so they need mounts to stabilize the engine and absorb any shocks and vibrations. The mounts are made of rubber and metal and can break or wear out causing an increase in vibrations while using the vehicle. A failed engine mount can be extremely damaging to an engine over time.
A Broken Heat Shield: A heat shield is a thermal barrier used to protect vehicle components and the cabin area from excessive heat emitted by the engine and exhaust system. There are metal guards that surround the various pieces of your exhaust system. Since much of the exhaust system is located underneath the car, it is likely to get damaged from moisture, debris, or just bumps on the road. It can rust or come loose after years of exposure resulting in a rattling sound. Exhaust repairs should be inspected by a trained and trusted technician to ensure you’re not at risk of exhaust fumes coming into the cabin area.
