CVT Transmission

Cvt Transmission Repair

Manual and Automatic are the two most common types of transmission but there is a third type called a (CVT) “Continuously Variable Transmission”. CVT’s have been around since the late 1980’s and have become more common over the last several years. CVT’s often provide better fuel economy, especially when driving in the city.
What is a CVT Transmission? A CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission does not make use of gears like a standard automatic transmission. It’s a type of automatic transmission but uses a pair of cone shaped pullies and a belt or chain system which provides infinite gear ratio flexibility. This allows the engine to operate in its most efficient rpm range.
Models That Offer CVT Automakers are using CVT’s more, particularly with hybrids and lighter cars while Subaru is all-in on CVT’s. Popular automakers such as Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi feature them in their automobile lineups while Hyundai, Kia and GM have adopted CVT’s for their smaller engines. Popular automakers are introducing CVT’s across the U.S. model line-ups to offer customers a choice with enhanced fuel economy and improved acceleration.
CVT Common Problems CVT’s are not without mechanical problems and can be expensive to repair or replace just like a basic automatic transmission. Common issues with CVT’s include slipping, grinding, jerking, shuddering, overheating and a sudden loss of acceleration. While some slipping of the CVT transmission is normal, excessive transmission slipping that bothers you while regular driving is an issue. This could be an indication that the transmission fluid is too low, worn out or contaminated.   Problems with the transmission fluid can cause excessive slipping. Worn-out internal components can cause a grinding noise coming from the CVT transmission gearbox. Although a degree of jerking under low speeds are normal, jerking or jumping forward is a serious sign for concern and should be address immediately.

It’s important to get your transmission looked at right away if your transmission has been slipping. It can be a warning sign of transmission failure heading your way. Various factors can cause a transmission to slip, and, in some cases, a minor repair may solve the problem. A major fix will require expert diagnostics, labor, and money.

Are you experiencing high engine revs and your vehicle doesn’t accelerate as much as it should then your transmission might be slipping. It’s not recommended to drive a vehicle with a slipping transmission. It could be dangerous for you, your vehicle, and even other vehicles nearby.
