Signs of a Worn Transfer Case

Tranfer Case Repair

A transfer case splits the engine power and sends it to the front and rear axles to power all wheels. They are only found in all-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive vehicles. Each transfer case varies according to the type of vehicle since each vehicle type has different needs. Like most car parts, a transfer case can wear out over time. A worn transfer case can leak from dry and worn seals. If a worn transfer case is ignored, it could lead to complete failure and need a replacement. To prevent failure, you should get your vehicle inspected and serviced regularly.
Here are 3 common signs that your transfer case needs inspection and service:
1.Your Vehicle is Making a Grinding Noise If you hear a grinding noise, it could be that your transfer case has broken or worn-out seals. When seals are no longer properly doing their job, it can cause the gears to grind against one another. If this problem goes unaddressed, it may lead to transmission failure.
2.You Find It Difficult to Shift Gears If it is difficult to shift gears, it could be caused by a leak. With a leak, there may not be enough oil to properly lubricate the gears. This could be a transfer case problem or a transmission problem.
3.Your Vehicle is Leaking Fluid Leaking fluid is not a good sign. When a 4-wheel drive is slipping, it may be from a loss of fluid and broken parts. If your vehicle has a loss of fluid, you may notice fluid under your vehicle. It is important to get your vehicle inspected if you ever notice fluid leaking.
Any of these 3 signs should be addressed as soon as you notice them. A worn-out or failing transfer case should be inspected and serviced by a professional. If it goes too long before getting resolved, it may need a replacement. These signs can mean that you have a problem with your transfer case or transmission.
